CARTOON of the DAY: Sniffing Out Trouble

The News-Herald - January 29
I've always been skeptical of the value of random sweeps of area high schools by drug-sniffing dogs; I did my first cartoon lampooning the concept more than 20 years ago. Not only have I never heard or read of a drug bust coming from one of the sweeps; I question how much of a deterrent they are. I suspect, no matter how well-trained the specialist dogs are, they can't resist the scent of a Twinkie.

CARTOON of the DAY: Play It Safe

Crain's Detroit Business - January 23
When the Detroit Police Department began a car theft and vandalism prevention initiative that focused upon creating temporary "No Parking" zones and then towing and impounding the vehicles of visitors to the city and its entertainment venues, I thought to myself, "... Hey! Why not make the city really safe and prohibit visitors - and residents - from carrying valuables to prevent muggings and hold ups?"

CARTOON of the DAY: This Warm House

The News-Herald - January 22
It may not make for compelling TV, but video energy audits for Downriver cable access TV emphasize the importance of making our homes energy-efficient ... to save natural resources, but more important (to this cartoonist/homeowner and father of three, for sure) - to save money!

CARTOON of the DAY: There's a Party at Cobo, and It's Spelled 'NAIAS'

The Press & Guide - January 18
Indulge me, readers ... one more North American International Auto Show cartoon, OK?! When I was six years old, my dad taught me how to gap a spark plug - my whole life, like most Detroiters, has been auto-centric. Dad worked at Hudson, Packard and Chrysler. I worked my way through college at Chevrolet; then covered the industry in the media before becoming an automotive PR guy. To me, it's one big car party in town through January 22 - join in, everybody - the party's at Cobo!

CARTOON of the DAY: Cars are the Stars, But We're All the Winners!

The News-Herald - January 15
There's a saying at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), "The cars are the stars." True enough, but when those stars shine, it's a positive reflection on all of us in the Motor City.

CARTOON of the DAY: Happy New (Car) Year!

Crain's Detroit Business - January 9
Detroit always knows how to kick off the New Year right ... with a big party we call the "North American International Auto Show!" Even in tough times over the past few years, when the show scaled back, it was a hopeful reminder of our collective skills, accomplishments and sense of purpose. Now, with things looking up a little, optimism is high and the party atmosphere is back. Happy New (Car) Year!

CARTOON of the DAY: A Win on Saturday Would Have Been Even Better

The News-Herald - January 8
For all or you who are lamenting the Lions' loss to the New Orleans Saints on Saturday, ask yourselves this: When was the last time you were thinking "... too bad the Lions' season is over," instead of "... thank GOODNESS the Lions' season is OVER!" They'll be back next year, and they gave us a heck of a ride this year!

CARTOONS of the DAY: The Parties (are) Over

The News-Herald - Jan 4

The Press & Guide - Jan 4
The holiday parties are over, but for this cartoonist, there's no "post holiday depression." Too much partying, feasting and family leave me longing for the routines of the rest of the year. Here are a couple of takes on that sentiment for two of the communities I'm privileged to draw for every week. Happy Holidays? Sure! But "happy every days" too!

CARTOON of the DAY: 2012 - The Job Ahead

The News-Herald - January 1
In 2011, things were supposed to get better - and they did, for some and to some degree; but a lot remains to be accomplished and that's the challenge for 2012. Every presidential candidate will have "answers," but it's really up to us to be participants in making the New Year all it can be. Happy New Year to all my readers - may it be a prosperous and safe one for you.
