The News-Herald - February 27
Most people I've talked to in the community have voiced some variation of the opinion reflected in today's cartoon. While Miguel Cabrera is the latest example, we see this played out time and time again with athletes and entertainers as well. It seems there's a clear double standard between those of us who buy the tickets (to games and movies) and those who do the performing (on the field or screen).

CARTOONS of the DAY: State of the City and State of the Weather
The Press & Guide - February 23
Mayor O'Reilly took a unique approach to delivering his State of the City Address in Dearborn - straightforward. It may not have been uplifting, but it was refreshing!
The News-Herald - February 23
Everyone around here finds personal ways to survive winter ... some rant, some give in to "cabin fever," and some - like me - just have to laugh.

CARTOON of the DAY: Freedom is Never Free
The Press & Guide - February 16
The same in any era, in any language, anywhere in the world ... freedom and self-determination is the desire of all people. The current changes underway in Egypt are the latest manifestation of this desire. But freedom is never free - a price must be paid to earn it, and the responsibility of sustaining it is hard work.

CARTOON of the DAY: Bricks and Memories
Crain's Detroit Business - February 14
Growing up in the 1960s, my friends and I weren't "mall rats" (... actually, there was only one mall in metro Detroit back then!), we hung out at bookstores. And that was before you could buy music, videos, or a latte ... we went for the books! The sight and the smell of books were intoxicating; and cracking the binding of a newly-purchased treasure was always exciting. It was painful to do this cartoon about the financial troubles of Borders, and even more painful to hear today that the company has, indeed, filed bankruptcy. I certainly hope that - like our auto companies - Borders rebounds and bookstores will remain a part of our culture. Today outlets like these are called "brick and mortar" stores; I think of them as "brick and memory" stores!

CARTOONS of the DAY: The Big - Long - Chill
The News-Herald - February 9
The Press & Guide - February 9
In SE Michigan, the common enemy at this time of year is winter. While weekends may be fun for sledding, cross country skiing and snowman building; they're just a small part of the season. Most of our time is spent scraping car windshields, clearing walks and commuting along roads and freeways lined with dirty snow and coated with salt. Enough, I say. Hurry Spring!

CARTOONS of the DAY: Fair Weather, and Foul
Crain's Detroit Business - January 31
When she was campaigning for re-election, former Governor Jennifer Granholm promised Michigan residents that, in five years, we'd be "blown away" by what she accomplished. Well, here we are - five years later, with our economy blown away, and the former governor gone with the wind; to make a new life in California!
The News-Herald - February 2
Ground Hog Day and this year, the pressure's off the furry critter, and on the new governor. Even a Ground Hog Day 2011 blizzard couldn't spoil the day.
