The News-Herald - January 26
The Press & Guide - January 26
Comfort food for a good cause - the annual Downriver Salvation Army "Soup Day" is always worth highlighting and saluting. To the west, in Dearborn, Henry Ford Community College treated area residents to some culture that's unavailable elsewhere.

CARTOONS of the DAY: Good news - good way to start the New Year
The News-Herald - January 19
The Press & Guide - January 10
Good news makes for good cartoons too. "Signs" of an improving economy and the merger of two Chambers of Commerce give Downriverites and residents of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the New Year!

CARTOONS of the DAY: Guest Starring ...
The Press & Guide - January 12
The News-Herald - January 12
Sometimes "guest star" characters, created by cartoonists whom I admire, are effective in emphasizing a local point of view. This week presented two such opportunities, in two different communities; Dearborn's dangerous dog ordinance and a school bus driver issue in Woodhaven.

January 2011 in Michigan, the North American International Auto Show showcasing a reinvented U.S. auto industry and a newly-installed governor dedicated to reinventing the state. There's the theme for the start of the New Year, reinventing ... everything!

CARTOONS of the DAY: Happy New Year Mr. Snyder
Off the Drawing Board - January 3 - I didn't have a New Years cartoon scheduled for Crain's Detroit Business, but I did these three roughs in advance for consideration. The big question seems to be will Rick Snyder change Lansing, or will Lansing change Rick Snyder? We may have to wait for that answer, but one thing is for sure - he's the first "big story" of 2011.

CARTOON of the DAY: On Two - Hut! Hut! Shop!
The News-Herald - January 2
Over the week between Christmas and New Years, and especially on New Years weekend, it seems people fall into one of two camps - football fans and non-football fans. For those of us who love the game, it's bliss; for the rest - well, it drives them to extremes.
