Not only have I never heard or read of a drug bust coming from one of the sweeps; I question how much of a deterrent they are. I suspect, no matter how well-trained the specialist dogs are, they can't resist the scent of a Twinkie.

For decades - for most of my adult life - Jim Harper was a part of Detroit radio and a part of all our lives. Harper and St. James, Harper and Gannon, Harper Gannon and You, Jim Harper and the Breakfast Club ... "Harper" was always the constant (and best) element of morning radio around here. But Jim was much more than that.

He was a dedicated supporter and fund raiser for Toys for Tots, the Humane Society and many other organizations in the metro area. And he was a dedicated supporter of all the communities in the metro area, appearing regularly to meet with fans and followers. My favorite appearance by Jim was in the Royal Oak Holiday Magic Parade (full disclosure, 'cause it's my home town).

We all owe Jim a big "Thank You!" for the years he spent lifting our spirits, sharing our lives and making us feel a part of his on-air family. Goodbye, Jim ... we'll miss you every morning.

I didn't do any shopping on "Black Friday," didn't even do any on Saturday or Sunday. My wife and oldest daughter, however, napped after Thanksgiving dinner so they could wade into the fray at midnight. I'll leave the store unidentified (I'm sure the scene was the same everywhere), but the experience they described was far more physical and stressful than any of the football games I watched all weekend (... including Ndamukong Suh's dust-up with Evan Dietrich-Smith!). Full-contact shopping is not my idea of recreation. Besides, I have my own holiday shopping tradition (learned it from my dad) - I go out just before the stores close on Christmas Eve!

Cass Tech Class of '72, Wayne State University ... held my first three jobs in the City, too. Where ever I travel for business or vacationing, I always tell folks I'm from Detroit. Sleeping Bear Dunes' status as "Most Beautiful Place in America," according to the recent Good Morning America viewers' poll, is more a testament to the power of social media - I think - than a testament to nature's handiwork.

The final closing of the stores in the Borders Books chain is emotionally wrenching. Personally, Borders has been a part of my life for 30 years. Visits to Borders were always eventful - if I was looking for a particular book, I'd always find several others as well. I could hold them, flip the pages, smell the ink-on-paper ... a total sensual and psychological experience. As my son and daughters grew up, the visits became family events and we enhanced the experience by sharing it. I'm certain we'll shift our visits to the surviving chain book store, and we'll continue to visit the wonderful little independent book stores around town, but I have the feeling I need to savor every one of those moments because they may not be experiences I can share with my grandchildren.

Off the Drawing Board: I offered two different takes on Detroit Mayor Bing's city hall struggles to my editors at Crain's Detroit Business this week. The first, which became the final above, had an alternative gag, with the Spirit of Detroit offering his resignation to the Mayor. My second idea focused on the "run government like a business" theme that both Mr. Bing and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder ran on. While he's had his rough moments, overall the idea seems to be working better for the Governor than the Mayor!

Off the Drawing Board: Last week's Crain's Detroit Business cartoon (March 14) about Governor Snyder's plan to tax the pensions of Michigan senior citizens was just one of a number of cartoon topics I offered to my colleagues on the CDB editorial team. Here are thumbnail sketches of two others.

The turnover on Detroit Mayor Dave Bing's senior staff inspire idea no. 1. I reached back to his NBA past to give the gag a hook relating those days to his current position.

Taking a local look at the NFL lockout inspired idea no. 2. The Detroit Lions have a $350 million debt load related to the construction of Ford Field that's ultimately not a problem, as long as they're filling Ford Field on game days. If the lockout extends to the regular season this fall, however, my guess is there's nothing in the Lions' playbook to pickup the debt blitz.

Two communities, two opportunities to comment on the worst and the best cases in each. Downriver, in Allen Park, city officials addressed budget problems with layoffs. Unlike other communities, however, Allen Park started with its Fire Department! I offered a look at what might be the next steps. In Dearborn, on the other hand, I was able to celebrate the fact that the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce Foundation is "cooking up" a way for creative entrepreneurs to find commercial success.

Off the Drawing Board: Earlier this week, my Crain's Detroit Business editorial cartoon took issue with Governor Snyder's proposal to eliminate Michigan's Film Tax Credit. Here's an alternative rough I offered to my editors at CDB. Maybe I was trying to be just a little too "punny" - playing off "gaffe" and "gaffeR" (a gaffer is a lighting technician on a movie set). Nonetheless, I got to highlight the Governor's gaffe in the version that was selected!

Growing up in the 1960s, my friends and I weren't "mall rats" (... actually, there was only one mall in metro Detroit back then!), we hung out at bookstores. And that was before you could buy music, videos, or a latte ... we went for the books! The sight and the smell of books were intoxicating; and cracking the binding of a newly-purchased treasure was always exciting. It was painful to do this cartoon about the financial troubles of Borders, and even more painful to hear today that the company has, indeed, filed bankruptcy. I certainly hope that - like our auto companies - Borders rebounds and bookstores will remain a part of our culture. Today outlets like these are called "brick and mortar" stores; I think of them as "brick and memory" stores!
